How to Ask the Right Question in a Tarot Card Reading

A good tarot reading begins with asking the right question.

Sometimes, you are going through big changes in your life and you need straightforward answers to straightforward questions.

For instance, in light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic and massive layoffs around the country, you may want to know: “Will I get laid off this year?”

This is perfectly understandable, and there are some fun ways to ask yes or no questions in tarot readings. For a good example, check out my Yes or No Pick-a-Card Reading on YouTube.

However, most questions that can answered with a yes or no are very closed-ended. They just don’t leave the cards enough room to speak.

A Better Approach

Asking open-ended questions is usually a better approach to a tarot reading.

Keeping in mind that tarot readings can help you tap into your intuition and the wisdom of the divine, they are good for problem analysis, brainstorming, decision clarification, self-understanding, spiritual growth and divination (foreseeing the future).

So, don’t be afraid to ask the really big questions, such as “what is my life’s purpose, or what spiritual lesson do I need to learn most right now?”

Tarot readings don’t have to be about probing the deep mysteries of life, however. They should be fun too.

Below are some good examples of questions you might want to ask when you take the plunge and schedule your first-ever tarot reading.

Tarot Reading Questions

Let’s say you want to find a romantic partner. You can ask, “Will I find a lover in the next six months?” But, you can get deeper information about your love life by asking probing questions, such as:

  • What is blocking me from finding a lover, and how can I remove those blockages?
  • What can I do to attract the right partner for me?
  • What signs might I see when I have met the right partner for me?

Whatever initial question you ask, be prepared to ask follow-up questions. The follow-up questions can be prepared in advance or they can come from the information you receive in the reading.

Whatever it is that you want to delve into further, the most important thing you can do is approach your reading with an attitude of hopeful expectation. Have faith that the right cards will come out to help you answer the questions that you have and to help you stay on your highest spiritual path.

The last thing I will leave you with on this subject is a list of the five major issues/concerns people ask about in tarot readings.

  • Health
  • Career
  • Family
  • Romance
  • Finances

Certainly, there are a host of other amazing and important things in life, so whatever you want to know about, you can find the answers you see in a tarot reading.

What is tarot?

A playing card deck dating to mid-15th century Europe, the tarot has been used as a divination tool since the late18th century.

Associated with what was at one time called the occult but is now referred to as Spiritualism or New Age philosophy, the tarot is thought to have originated in Italy, though this is not certain.

Some occult enthusiasts claim the cards reference ancient Egypt, the Kabbalah, Indian Tantra and the I Ching, among many others, but no documented evidence of such origins has been found. There is also no evidence of the tarot being used as a divination tool before the 18th century.

For many years, tarot cards were used as regular playing cards, like today’s Hoyle playing cards are used to play Rummy, Spades, Poker and other games. Eventually, however, people started seeing representations of daily life in the images on the cards.

The earliest evidence of a tarot deck used for “fortune-telling” or divinatory purposes comes from an anonymous manuscript from France circa 1750.

France is also where esoteric tarot was popularized. It started with Antoine Court and Jean-Baptiste Alliette (Etteilla) in Paris during the 1780s. Court and Alliette used the Tarot of Marseilles as a fortune-telling tool, but around 1900, French tarot players abandoned the Marseilles tarot in favor of Tarot Nouveau.

Etteilla was the first to issue a tarot deck specifically designed for occult purposes around 1789. In keeping with the misplaced belief that such cards were derived from the Book of Thoth, Etteilla’s tarot contained themes related to ancient Egypt.

Today, the three decks most commonly used in esoteric tarot are the Tarot of Marseilles, the Rider-Waite tarot deck and the Thoth tarot deck. There are many others, however, and each deck contains symbolism that the deck’s creator identifies with on a spiritual, historic and/or cultural level.

Full of symbolism and artistry, tarot cards become a part of their owner as much as the owner’s energy becomes a part of the cards. Though they may not be for everyone, I invite you to take a look at a deck of tarot cards to see if they speak to you. They could open a door to better understanding, more clarity and great fun!
